If you've just started looking for a home in Carmel, a great way to start is to decide which area best suits your daily life and needs.

All of the restaurants, art galleries, coffee shops, wine bars and other shops run along Ocean Avenue and within a couple of blocks north and south of Ocean Avenue. There are small hotels in the residential areas, but all other retail and services are in the commercial district.

As you look at these listings you will notice that the addresses seem a little odd.  How to find an address in Carmel.

The "golden rectangle" is the southwest quadrant of Carmel-by-the-Sea.  It is often seen as the most desirable area of Carmel. The area is relatively flat and close to the beach, while also not far from restaurants, coffee shops, and stores.

Carmel Point is just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea. It is in "Carmel" which is the unincorporated area of Monterey County that is adjacent to the city of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

This area is bordered to the west by Scenic road and the Pacific and to the south by Carmel River State Beach. Mission Ranch is a small hotel and restaurant that is in this area. Carmel River Elementary School is also in this area of town.

Many of the lots on the point are larger than in Carmel-by-the-Sea.  Because it is in the county, remodeling and development are overseen by the Monterey County Resource Management Agency not the Carmel-by-the-Sea planning department.

Like Carmel Point, Carmel Woods is in the unincorporated area of Monterey County adjacent to Carmel-by-the-Sea. Carmel Woods often has lots that are larger than in the city and given its higher elevation many of the homes have views of the Pacific. This area is rarely traveled by tourists and is only residential.

This neighborhood is North of Ocean Avenue and is bordered by Pescadero Canyon that sits between Carmel-by-the-Sea and Pebble Beach.  This area has more varied topography than areas south of Ocean Avenue so some houses can have views of the Pacific and Pebble Beach golf course.

This area is bordered on the east by Mission Trails park which is a wonderful urban park with trails, a seasonal stream and a meadow with a view of the Pacific Ocean and the Carmel Mission. This area is only residential with the exception of the Outdoor Forest Theater.
